Fall is here—and there’s no better time to be on the course. Crisp air, vibrant colors, and rolling fairways create an experience unlike any other. That’s why we’re launching our brand-new video series, “Play This Fall,” highlighting some of the most beautiful places to tee it up this season.

Set in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge foothills, Stoney Creek at Wintergreen Resort offers a mountain golf experience unlike most. Designed by Rees Jones, the course delivers scenic drama without the usual sidehill punishment that mountain golf is known for. It’s a place where the land unfolds gently, where the contours feel natural, and where every tee box seems to frame the valley just right.

I chose Stoney Creek for its reputation—host to multiple VSGA championships, a consistent test of golf, and always in great condition. But it’s also the accessibility that drew me in. Just a short drive from Charlottesville and nestled near Virginia’s wine country, Wintergreen feels worlds away without being out of reach.

Of the resort’s three nines—Monocan, Shamokin, and Tuckahoe—it was Monocan that caught my attention most. The fifth hole, a par three played over water with bunkers tucked neatly behind, might be one of the most beautiful one-shot holes in Virginia. The eighth on Tuckahoe mirrors that same energy: a par three framed by trees that glow gold and red each fall.

During my visit, a member league was teeing off for an evening round. Golfers of every background and ability sharing the course, chatting on the tee boxes, laughing down fairways—it felt like a community more than a club. One member told me he spends summers here, calling Wintergreen his escape. I could see why.

Stoney Creek is a reminder that great resort golf doesn’t need to be far-flung or exclusive. It just needs good design, mountain air, and a place that welcomes everyone.
